- I've owned and set up a lot of modems and fell in love with
- the Supra's ever since they offered the display. I've
- never had a modem I could not get working reasonably
- well. I've recommended the Supra's to friends and they
- also love them.
-
- However I needed a 3rd 28.8 modem now (for the office)
- since they have no connection to the internet :-)
-
- I really really wanted a 33.6 modem but also still really really
- wanted the display. I called supra a couple weeks ago
- and they gave me the standard line "When it's a standard".
- I figured 33.6 would be here sooner or later.
-
- So I figured I'd give the sportster 33.6 a try (even though it
- can't be flashed either). Well I finally got to compare these
- two and they run almost identical. I use MSN, an ISP and
- Compuserve all at 28.8. My ISP uses (some) new sportsters and
- is a local call. I figured I could swap the two modems
- (office and home) based on their performance and my needs.
-
- I get slightly more disconnects (during initial handshaking)
- with the Sportster (1 in 10) versus maybe 1 in 50 with supra.
- I also had to lower the DTE speed from 115k (it seemed very
- flakey at 115k) to 56k on the sportster. (I could of also played
- with the FIFOs which I've seen magically fixed other folks modem
- nightmares). I suspect something is on the hairy edge, which
- is why some folks claim they had to return the unit several
- times before they got a "good one". I know it should run at
- 115k, but in the real world it is rare that it would make a
- difference.
-
- I also ran both modems through an Analog to Digital adapter
- (Konnex through handset). Connect speeds are all over the
- map, but again, both modems seem to perform the same.
- It appears MSN however uses magic modems, I manage to
- get a 28.8 connection through the Konnex connector !!!
- quite often, where as I consistently get low connect rates
- to my ISP (who uses Sporters). I know it could be the lines, but the
- konnex connector consistently lowers connect rates no matter
- which modem or site I use, expect for MSN is not phased by it.
- Interesting !!!
-
- I've never seen anything above 28.8K on the sportster.
-
- Now I hear rumor about Supra offering 33.6, if true I will
- return my sportster without hesitation. Otherwise it's about
- a even (33.6 for the display). But if I can have my cake and
- eat too, then that's what I'll go for.
-
- I don't know if I'd spend a $100.00 for upgrade though.
- 33.6 kicks in too rarely at least for me, at this time.
- For $50.00 I'd probably do it.
-
- Note the machines involved are a P120 and 486DX266
- both with Win95 and both with 16550's.
-
- P.S. I also had to diddle the FIFO's on my Megaherz PCMCIA
- modem in a Toshiba 400CDT. And boom all problems are
- history. However it consistently gets one notch lower connect
- speeds, but otherwise a very stable modem.
